Plant nutrients are classified in two: macro elements that plants need more and micro elements that they need relatively less. Calcium is one of the macro elements that plants need more.
Calcium is the essential component of the cell wall in plants. In the presence of enough calcium, plants become more resistant to disease and pests as the cell wall gets harder. The rigidity of the fruits and their survival after harvest is higher. If there is not enough calcium, the cell wall weakens, the resistance of plants to diseases and pests decreases, and fruits deteriorate more quickly after harvest.
There is more calcium in the soil than the plants need, except in regions that receive excess rainfall. Sometimes even the excess calcium in the soil can prevent the uptake of some other elements. However, this does not mean that there is no need for calcium fertilization in plants.
Calcium is absorbed very difficultly by plants and its mobility within the plant is extremely limited. Therefore, even if there is plenty of calcium in the soil, plants cannot benefit from it and often lack calcium. Bitter pit in apples and pears; blossom end rot seen in many vegetables such as peppers, eggplant and tomatoes are caused by calcium deficiency.
Calcium fertilization in plants should be applied from leaves as it has an extremely limited uptake from the soil. In case it is applied from the leaf, a homogeneous spray should be prepared and calcium should be given at regular intervals throughout the development season as the transmission between the plant organs is very little.
The sources commonly used in calcium fertilization are calcium fertilizers complexed with calcium nitrate, calcium chloride and some organic substances. Studies have shown that calcium chloride is absorbed more effectively when applied from the leaf. Our product Calvelox is a highly effective calcium chloride solution which is strengthened with special organic compounds.
Calcium fertilizers can cause problems when mixed with other pesticides and fertilizers from time to time. Therefore, the preference should be to apply calcium fertilizers alone.
